Jib Crane Parts and Components

The majority of jib cranes have a very simple crane design and construction. When compared to workshop cranes, overhead cranes, and gantry cranes, jib cranes are simple to operate and have a low breakdown time. The main parts of jib cranes are presented for your reference.

  • Reach/Boom The boom of a jib crane refers to the horizontal beam, arm, or cantilever on which the trolley with the electric / manual hoist moves horizontally.
  • Mast/Pillar Jib mast or pillar is a vertical beam, pillar, or post that supports the arm or cantilever or boom on freestanding and mast jib crane systems.
  • Movable Electric Hoist An motorized or manual powered jib hoist is used to lift and lower a load.
  • Trolley the travelling trolley, which can be powered by motor, manual, or pneumatic, carrying the jib hoists, either chain hoists or wire rope hoists,to move along the entire length of the boom/ arm/ cantilever.
  • Rotation on free standing jib cranes or pillar jib cranes and mast jib cranes, the rotation angle can be 360° of boom rotation. Wall travelling jib cranes, wall mounted jib crane and column-mounted jib cranes, the rotation angle can be 180-200°.
  • Controls Crane controls of jib cranes are used on motorized or air-powered jib systems, to control the rotation of the jib boom or jib arm, and the movement of the trolley to lift up and down and travelling. The jib crane controls usually are push button controls and also the Multi-speed or variable speed controls are available.
  • Hook Height - The height which the jib hoist will lift the loads up.
  • Rotation Stop rotation stop is a devices to limit the crane’s motion before colliding with a nearby object or obstructions such as a wall, etc.
  • Environmental Considerations Due to particular environment features, additional devices or features should be included in the design of jib cranes such as, resist corrosion features, explosion proof features, and heat, dust, dirt, or moisture resistant, etc.
  • Rotation Stop A rotation stop is a device that limits the crane's movement before it collides with a nearby object or obstruction, such as a wall.
  • Environmental Considerations Due to specific application environmental features, additional devices and features, such as resist corrosion features, explosion proof features, and heat, dust, dirt, or moisture resistance, should be included in the design of jib crane systems.

Jib Crane Mounting Types

Free Standing Jib Crane

This is the most common type of jib system because it can be installed almost anywhere, including indoors and outdoors. Freestanding jib systems can be used beneath large overhead crane systems or in open areas where individual work cells can be supported. They can also be used outside at marinas or loading docks, as well as indoors for machining and assembly operations where multiple jibs can be used concurrently with the staged operation.

A free-standing jib crane has its own column and, once installed, is permanently attached to the ground. Foundations with significant depths would be required to withstand the overturning moment in order to fix a free standing jib crane to the floor. A tubular column allows for a full 360° slew, but it's important to note that if used with an electric chain hoist, power must be supplied via slip rings unless stops are included to prevent a full rotation.

A lower capacity or shorter radius jib crane must be fixed directly to the floor if the floor specification is known in advance and is suitable and in good condition. For jib cranes with a larger radius and load capacity, the most cost-effective mounting solution would be to cast directly into the floor, but this would also require moving it at a later date, which is an unappealing prospect. A bolted connection, which requires a base plate and fixings that require more space around the base of the column, or the use of chemical anchors is often a more suitable installation.

Base Mount Jib Cranes

Base mount jib cranes also go by the names of floor mount jib cranes or free standing jib cranes. These typically install onto a concrete footing, thus not applying a load to the building columns. These self supporting jib cranes are fitting for applications which are not near building columns or require large capacities or spans. These can also mount into a sleeve which is installed on top of the floor or recessed into the floor. Capacities are available up to 15 Tons, spans up to 50’, and up to 40’ to the underside of boom. Rotation is 360 degrees.

Base mount jib cranes - Floor mount jib cranes and free standing jib cranes are other names for base mount jib cranes. These are typically installed on a concrete footing, removing the load from the building columns. These self-supporting jib cranes are ideal for applications that do not require large capacities or spans and are not near building columns. These can also be installed in a sleeve installed on top of the floor or recessed into the floor. Capacities of up to 16 Tons are available and the rotational axis is 360 degrees.

Pillar Jib Cranes

When there isn't a suitable building column nearby, mast or pillar jib cranes come in handy. The jib's mast or pillar connects to the floor and the overhead support steel. As a result, they apply forces to the building, but those forces often necessitate less reinforcement steel than a tie-rod or cantilever jib crane. Standard sizes range from 5 Tons to 20' span and 20' to the underside of the boom. Larger-scale custom projects are possible. The rotational axis is 360 degrees.

Foundationless & Portable Jib Cranes

Foundationless jib cranes are bolted-to-reinforced-concrete industrial slab-mounted systems. They function similarly to base mount jibs but do not require a special foundation. This type of jib crane can be installed almost anywhere in your facility and is easily relocated if necessary.

Portable jib cranes are similar to base mounted jib cranes, but they are attached to a heavy steel base. This jib crane design eliminates the need for concrete foundation and can be moved easily by a forklift for multiple uses.

Wall Mounted Jib Cranes

A wall-mounted jib crane secures the bearings to a pre-existing structure, such as a building, column, or wall. The jib crane's slew would be limited to 180° if fixed to a wall, but column-mounted or pillar mounted jib units could rotate up to 270° depending on the installation.

You must assess the most appropriate jib crane designs for your operational needs and application conditions, provide drawings outlining the imposed loadings on the structure, such as a wall or column, and calculate a'maximum moment' in force, which is generated by the combined weight of the load and lifting appliance when at the end of the jib, while taking into account the dynamic effects of operation under the loads.

Where strength allows, wall mount jib cranes can be mounted at any height on a vertical wall or building columns. They are ideal for areas with limited floor space and can easily swing out of the way of overhead cranes. A wall traveling jib crane could also be installed to maximize hook coverage area when compared to a traditional wall mounted jib crane.

Ceiling Mount Jib Crane

When it comes to maximizing production area below the jib, ceiling mount jib cranes are an excellent choice. They provide a clear work area with no floor obstructions, as well as maximum headroom and clearance in small workstations. These cranes are typically attached to a carrier that operates on a bridge or monorail system. They are also suitable for use with an articulating jib crane and can support almost any type of manipulator, balancer, or hoist. The rotational axis is 360 degrees.

Jib Crane Boom Type - Types of Jib Cantilever Designs

Tie-Rod Jib Crane

Tie-rod jib cranes are a simple design that uses less material than other jibs. The tie-rod jib is composed of the main jib beam attached to a wall mounted pivot and a tie-rod above that beam running at approximately 30 degrees to a second wall mounted pivot. These are the lightest jib crane designs, and they can be found on both wall mount and pillar jib cranes.

Cantilever Jib Crane

Cantilever jib cranes are made up of a "L" shaped weldment attached to wall mounted pivots, similar to tie-rod style jibs. These are ideal for applications with limited headroom.

Articulating Jib Crane

Articulating jib cranes are beneficial for applications that require frequent use, precise positioning, or reaching around corners or around columns. The jib boom or cantilever has a secondary pivot, which allows for easy movement of the load, especially when it is close to the main pivot. When attached to an overhead bridge crane system, these are fantastic.

Under-braced and Over-braced Jib Cranes

For how the cantilevered arm is supported, jib cranes are classified as under-braced or over-braced. A tension member runs from the top of the king post to about two-thirds of the way down the jib arm on an over-braced jib. The advantage of this is that it has a lighter structure that allows the chain hoist to get as close to the supporting structure as possible, allowing for the most effective travel.

It also allows for the use of specific track sections rather than a rolled beam. The disadvantage is that for a given height of lift, more headroom is required. The cantilever support on an under-braced jib is located beneath the runway beam. This reduces the amount of headroom required, but it necessitates a heavier rolled beam and reduces the maximum effective travel.

  • All high-strength bolts must be tightened properly; a common bolt cannot be used to replace a high-strength bolt.
  • After five times of replications, the bolts fastener must be replaced.
  • Bolts fastener should never be lubricated.
  • When used for one to two months, all bolt fasteners must be tightened. Bolts that have broken should be replaced.
  • Check the dowel connection, and make sure all rabbets are facing outward. Or the electric hoist could break down.
  • Because iron links might have force out of force, which can break the hoist down, the hoist and hook device should use a soft connection method hanging on the jib boom.
  • Flat cable is used in our jib boom crane. Furthermore, the cable's insulated wire and grounding conductor should be painted yellow green.

The cable's grounding conductor cannot be tightened, and the grounding connection point should not become loose.

Whether wall-mounted or floor-mounted, electric jib cranes are an economical type of overhead crane for light duty material handling in smaller work spaces for unique lifting tasks and the jib crane systems can be used as an supplementary lifting to overhead cranes to make them more versatile. Electric jib hoists and hoist cranes provide slew angles of between 180 and 360 degrees which supply even rotation, hoist travel and lift. These cranes can be modified with the addition of an elbow to improve flexibility in smaller spaces.
