Single Girder Crane vs. Double Girder Crane

Which do you select the single girder crane or double girder crane? Check comparisons of single / double girder overhead / gantry crane to get right girder crane.

Overhead Crane

The application and building envelope should be taken into account when choosing the girder type for an overhead crane rather than the cost. Even though single girder cranes tend to cost less than double girder cranes, each is the ideal equipment for the application for which it was intended.

Overhead crane with single girder design

Single-girder cranes work well for light- to medium-duty tasks in typical manufacturing or maintenance settings. With a single girder attached to the end trucks, a single girder crane can span the appropriate length of a structure by running its end trucks along a runway rail. With single girder cranes, the cross travel trolley typically runs on the lower flange of the bridge girder when the hoist is underrunning. With the bridge girder structure of wide flange beams under 65' span and fabricated single box girder over 65' span, single girder cranes are typically limited to 20 ton capacities. There is a 130' maximum total span.

  • European style low headroom design design

Because the hoist is below the girder, single girder cranes often require less room above the top of the runway beam to the lowest obstruction of the building. The runways have been positioned at a high point inside many existing structures, limiting the available clearance for just single girder crane operation.

If the application is simple production or maintenance and the duty requirement is light to heavy, a single girder crane should be adequate.

Pros of Single Girder

  • Less upfront cost due to less material and faster installation.
  • The most cost-effective light-to-medium-duty crane option.
  • Reduced stress on the building structure.
  • Improved hook method for trolley and bridge travel.
  • Installation, service, and maintenance are simplified.
  • If the building has enough headroom, this is a good option.

Cons of Single Girder

  • Because the hoist is usually located beneath the girder, the hook height is reduced.
  • Under-running trolleys can cause premature beam wear.
  • Special features such as service walks and lighting can be costly or difficult to install.
  • Weight capacity is limited.
  • Crane span is shorter.

Overhead crane with double girder design

For greater capacity, longer duty cycles, and longer bridge spans, double girder cranes are excellent. Two girders are attached to the end trucks of double-girder cranes, and the end trucks run along runway rail that extends the appropriate distance along the building. When using a twin girder crane, the hoist is mounted on rails that have been placed on top of the girders, spanning the gage of the two girders. Since the hoisting equipment is mounted on top of the girders rather than below them, double girder cranes are typically employed for higher loads, longer bridge spans, and improved hook height. Double girder cranes with spans well over 150' and a capacity of more than 100 tons.

Since the hoisting equipment runs above the bridge girder, double girder cranes often require extra clearance from the top of the runway beam to the lowest impediment of the building. In order to use a twin girder crane, there must be 4' or more of runway clearance over the lowest impediment. Unless the hoist is dropped in between the girders, which is usually expensive, this above the runway clearance requirement increases with the crane's capacity.

The utilization of twin girder cranes is ideally suited for several specialized applications, including heavy production, coil handling, and turning of loads using multiple hoists.

Pros of Double Girder

  • Larger to support more weight.
  • Can span a greater distance.
  • Increased hook height.
  • There are no restrictions on its span or capacity.
  • Features such as catwalks, cabs, and lighting can be added.
  • Can be used both indoors and outdoors.
  • Simple to maintain.

Cons of Double Girder

  • More expensive due to the addition of structural support and more complex components.
  • Increased setup costs.
  • Hook approach for trolley or bridge travel has been simplified.

Gantry crane: Single girder vs. Double Girder

Single girder gantry cranes are widely used both indoors and outdoors, in places such as storage, workshops, warehouses, ports, assembly plants, hydroelectric power plants, and so on. Our single girder crane has a simple structure and an excellent design. Get a custom and high-quality single-beam gantry crane to improve efficiency and save energy.

Gantry Cranes with Single Girder Design

  • When compared to double  girder gantry crane systems, this technology may work more quickly and requires less space.
  • When compared to double girder gantry crane systems, this system is more cost-effective.
  • Although they can be utilized in enclosed spaces as well, these systems are typically used in open (outdoor) locations.
  • Since this system is mostly utilized in exposed locations, it is heavily painted and coated to prevent corrosion.
  • The main girder can be built as a cage or a beam and is made of iron sheet.
  • Single girder gantry cranes may be built with or without an end piece.
  • Push-button (pendant control) and wireless radio remote control systems are both used to operate the crane system.
  • Available with DIN, FEMO standards, and ISO standards.
  • Our systems frequently employ security sensors and overload limit switches.
  • Systems using frequency inverters are offered for lifting and moving purposes.

Gantry Crane with double girder design

For heavy duty work, a double girder gantry crane is often used. It may also have a second hook at the same time. As a result, it can also lift small objects quickly and effectively. The double beam gantry crane has a large loading capacity and is well-suited for use in a variety of locations, including ports, quays, building sites, assembly plants, workshops, and warehouses. To meet your unique demands, we encourage customized service.

Advantages of  Double Girder Gantry Cranes

  • The capacity and size of double girder gantry crane systems are designed. When compared to single girder systems, they can also carry heavy loads.
  • When compared to single girder systems, double girder gantry cranes have more lifting capacity.
  • These systems are primarily used in open (outdoor) areas, but they can also be used in enclosed areas.
  • Because these systems are primarily used in open areas, they are highly coated and painted to resist corrosion.
  • More hoist applications on the same girder are available, as are monorail systems beneath the bridges.
  • Maintenance platforms are necessary for all of our products in order to facilitate simple assembly and maintenance. Push button (pendant control) and wireless radio remote control devices are both used to operate the crane system.
  • Din, fem, and ISO standards are available.
  • Our systems frequently employ security sensors and overload limit switches.
  • Systems using frequency inverters are offered for lifting and moving purposes.

Single Girder Gantry Crane v.s Double Girder Gantry Crane

What makes a single girder gantry crane different from a double girder gantry crane?

Similarity of single girder & double girder gantry crane

  • To start, they share a lot of characteristics. They are both crucial lifting instruments, for instance, in today's industry.
  • They are all applicable in all  industrial sectors.
  • They also have the same benefits, uses, and features.
  • Although they are typically utilized in wide-open spaces, factories can also use portal cranes. It serves as an alternative use for overhead cranes in indoor workshops or applications.
  • It is possible to manufacture double-girder gantry cranes with or without cantilevers.

Differences of single girder vs double girder gantry crane

  • In comparison to single girder cranes, double girder cranes typically have a higher loading capacity.
  • On the other hand, they have various prices. Single beam cranes are frequently less expensive than double beam cranes.
  • Double girder gantry cranes are chosen and utilized extensively for heavier loads handlingin every sector of the industry because they are inexpensive, simple to maintain and repair, have no size or capacity restrictions, and are designed and manufactured with the features that customers require.
  • Compared to single-girder gantry cranes, far higher lifting heights can be achieved.
